Boas and Colubrids

Other than royal pythons I also keep a small selection of colubrids, as well as a pair of Brazilian Rainbow Boas.  My 2 corn snakes were what began it for me, leading to what has now become somewhat an obsession.  Anyway lets get to the snakes themselves.  Once again excuse the names at least my other half takes an interest, and that a positive..... Right?

Brazilian Rainbow Boas (BRB)/:

Rocky:
Rocky was the first Boa I bought, and is the third snake that I had owned.  He is a CB11 BRB, and growing like a weed due to his absolute love of food and willingness to eat absolutely anything.  I was initially a bit wary whether to get a BRB or not due to their reputation of being nippy as youngsters, however Rocky has never nipped me so I suppose I must be lucky.  He is a pretty relaxed snake and is pretty active during the night which is nice to see.I love his deep red colour and how high his white sides rise up his body.I have plans to breed Rocky with Roxy in the future when both are up to a safe breeding weight.

Roxy:

Roxy was the second boa that I bought.  She is a female CB12 BRB, and because of this she is slightly smaller than rocky, by around 250g and about 7-9 inches shorter.  I got Roxy about mid January in 2013, and was sold her as an aggressive snake, I thought to my self 'hey why not have a challenge and try to get this boa tame'.  When I collected her I was pretty shocked, absolutely no sign of anger at all or any attempt to bite me, although my challenge was shattered I was still pretty happy to have finally found a female BRB that matched my needs, which was a high orange female with contrasting black and white.  I can't wait to get her to breeding size, firstly for her colours getting brighter, and also being able to breed her to Rocky to see how each of their colours interact and are passed on to their babies.

Jake:

Jake is where it all started, the spark to the reptile fire.  He is my oldest resident in the snake room at 16 years old, and he is still going as strong as day 1, and I am pretty amazed at how bright his colours have remained considering his age.  He is a male Carolina corn snakes who is a CB07.  He was my first breeder male that I ever tried to breed with, and he has been doing the deed ever since until last year as I thought it is time to retire him, much to his dislike.  He has sired too many clutches for me to count but is easily in excess of 100 babies, all of which were nice and healthy.  Jakes Is probably the most chilled out snake I have ever met, he just takes any thing that is thrown at him without ever hissing or biting me, which I think is pretty decent.  Any way Jake is here for the long haul and hopefully I can get another 16 years out of him yet.

Dot:

Dot is my female corn snake that I have had for just under 15 years.  She is a CB08 amelanistic corn snake.  Amelanistic corns lack the pigment which contributes to darker colouration, melanin.  This gives them their lighter appearance.  Dot initially was my sister's snake however my sister lost interest in her so therefore I inherited her, fairly lucky for me.  She was the first female snake that I bred, and that was with Jake, since then I have had multiple clutches from her, the largest being 27 eggs.  Dot is now a retired female and will not be bred with again due to her age, I think that this is best for her health in order to avoid any risk to her.  Unfortunatly she has begun to develop slight cataracts in one of her eyes, due to older age, this doesn't affect her at all and she is healthy in absolutely every way.  As with Jake, Dot will be her for the duration of my reptile keeping and I can hopefully have her for another 15 years.

Fred:
Fred is my male het albino hognose.  He is a CB11 I believe, and is a fairly good size for a hognose.  I got him early May 2013 as a beginning to move towards breeding hognose snakes as I was intrigued by their personalities and appearance. This idea for breeding Fred has not developed any further than an idea, and quite honestly I can say I am happy that it has turned out that way.  Not that I wouldn't want little hognose snakes trying to intimidate me with their false strikes and cobra like attitudes.  I think he is, at the moment at least, going to remain a singleton.  This does not mean I will not eventually find him a lady friend in the future but for now he is one of the gang that will more than likely be with me for the duration.  He is one hell of a firecracker and sure does let me know when he is in the mood for handling and when he wants me to get lost, but to be honest I love that about his personality and wouldn't have him any other way.
